Bob’s Breedlove
Our friend Bob dropped by looking for a setup on his Breedlove AC25 acoustic. Bob had some honest wear on the first five frets that we polished away. Cowboy chords forever! The Breedlove AC25 is an interesting guitar that offers the best upper fret access of any acoustic cutaway I’ve played. Bob’s Breedlove is a rich-sounding, responsive instrument. Thanks for stopping by, Bob! Bring us another guitar to play!
Luke’s SG
Luke was in and out of the shop a half-dozen times this month trying to get a new bridge pickup in his Epiphone SG. The first pickup I installed, a Whole Lotta Humbucker, didn’t sound right (I think the wiring diagram included with the pickup was wrong). Luke returned the pickup and got a Seymour Duncan JB Model Humbucker. This installation went okay, but then the neck pickup stopped working. I wired it back up but it was out of phase and needed a re-wire. Then I replaced the entire wiring harness with a new one, but the bridge pickup sounded thin like only one coil was working. WTF? This simple installation confounded me. As one friend noted, “There are only three wires, dude.” There are five wires, but the point is valid. This job shouldn’t be difficult. But every time I clipped the wires to resolder, they got a little shorter, until I had to start splicing in longer lengths of wire to make all the connections. Ultimately, Luke’s SG is a rock ‘n’ roll machine. The control cavity isn’t pretty, but the sound coming out of this guitar is sweet and smooth, as good as any Gibson product. Rock on Luke. Play loud!
